Olivier Piva studied chemistry at the University of Reims and obtained his Ph-D with Prof. J.P. Pete (1988). Following a postdoctoral stay with Prof. D. Enders (RWTH), he joined in 1989 the CNRS as Chargé de recherche. He was a NATO research associate with Prof. S.V. Ley (Cambridge Univ.) in 1995. He was promoted full Professor at Univ. Lyon 1 in 1998. His research interests encompass photochemistry, metathesis, tandem reactions and their applications to natural product synthesis.
Initially centered on the study of asymmetric photochemical reactions, our research has shifted towards atom- and step economy processes involving metathesis (in tandem and sequential mode) or the formation of heterocycles (lactones and THP using the Prins reaction). These different processes were successfully applied to the synthesis of natural products. More recenttly, we have also investigated new accesses to propellanes and spiranic compounds.
